MLML 8-10 notes

Chapter 8:

This chapter talks about the journey of Desiree to the grand hotel. I think it not only notes how hard Desiree is on the way to her dream, but also a real state of the island. It was amazing how the author keeps our blinded as peasants in the beginning, not sure where we are. I was confused and scared at first with all the myths. And was blinded with peasants' one side argument about how widely the people on the island detach from each other. But through Desiree's journey, I finds that the trench between the poor and the rich are not as bad as I was imagining. There are different levels of the poor and the rich, Desiree is just unlucky to love the richest one. First I thought the story happens in a fantasy novel, with all the hierarchy and cruel king. I was wrong. It is a modern society, only that our main character comes from a forgotten no where.

The narration of the journey thus makes the world of the story more wholistic. Looking the whole book, maybe the peasants are themselves trapped in an ancient world, believing gods. Thus it is also making the audience wearing the peasants' shoes, magnifying the tragedy.

Chapter 9:

This chapter, Desiree meets an orphan girl. In this short chapter, Desiree teaches her tradition to the girl and wishes her to be the new Desiree. I think it is implying that the old Desiree is waving to her past and wants to be a new person. A new person who separates from her old identity of Desiree. It may also implies that the old Desiree will die.

Chapter 10:

Desiree was refused to enter the gate of the hotel. She was called a peasant pig. She when to search for shoes and her patient pays off. A good woman understands her and provides help making her beautiful again. At the end, Desiree was warned that bad things might happen. All gates are hard to enter for the poor, gates of heaven, or perhaps the gate of someone's heart.
