Mirage

Mirage The movie starts with Tom walking alone on a street. He says nothing, but instead, he hears someone calling his name and sees someone wearing white dress running across the street. After a blink, these shadows are gone. He then shifts to his memory about his mother and his sister. He lived in a family which the father left with nothing but a smile. He had to work in a warehouse to take care the whole family. He had an annoying mother who tries to control everything in the family, at the same time, he also had a meek sister who feels inferior because she has plurosis. Laura, the sister, lied that she goes to business school everyday. Laura has no strength on living on her own but treasures the glass animals a lot. When Amanda, the mother, finally found out Laura’s lie, she decided to find a gentleman caller for Laura. She wants the gentleman caller to replace Tom in the family because she also knew Tom was unwilling to stay in the family. Thus Amanda asked Tom to find a gent...

Journal

Laura Sunday I still go out for walks, although mom has found out I did not go to business school. I hope she could blame on me but she didn’t. Today I didn’t go to the museum. I went to the park and sit on the bench mostly. There was sunlight coming down and made me warm. I like the feeling and nobody was there. It's quiet. Mom told me to type something every day. It helps me to practice my typing skill. Although I don’t need much of it now, she says some day it will help. I think she is right.  I like to sit and type something after I polished my collections. Monday Days ago Tom broke little Lucy, a cute bird. I buried her in the gray box. Tom wasn’t on purpose so I forgave him. He is my brother and I love him. He broke Lucy because he was arguing with mom. Mom wasn’t happy and she wouldn’t talk to Tom. But today Tom apologized so we are happy again. Tom did nothing wrong though. He told me he was going to the movie and he never lie to me. He is a good brothe...

Discussion Questions

Act I: Why Laura would walk on the street rather than going to the business school? Suppose she doesn't want others to think she is crippled? What can the break of the glass menagerie means? Act II: Does the expression Tom has of Jim change after the dinner? Did Tom every go back? Characters: Does Amanda cry? What will happen to Laura? Staging: What are the actually usages of the darkness in the act 2? What are the usages of the transparent curtain? Others: Does Jim really have an engagement? Why Jim goes down after high school?

Amanda: “Why, you're not crippled, you just have a little defect - hardly noticeable, even! When people have some slight disadvantage like that, they cultivate other things to make up for it - develop charm - and vivacity - and - charm!” Amanda uses this quote to comforts Laura when Laura says she has a disadvantage of being crippled. Superficially, we can see that she loves her daughter. Although her words sounds more like a demand, she tried her best to comfort her daughter. On the other hand, the quote illustrate Amanda as a self-liar. All she says in this quote can be condensed into one sentence such as: “Never say you are crippled.” However, she says it repetitively; we also know that Laura IS crippled. For me, rather than emphasizing the meaning, Amanda seems more like convincing someone. Because she is not listening to Laura, she is convincing herself that her daughter is gorgeous. She is also comforting herself that she has a beautiful daughter though she has a “s...
