Chapter one: Monsieur Bienconnu: the storyteller Tonton Julian: the father of the family. Mama Euralie: The mother of the family Désirée: the adopted daughter This chapter introduces the setting of the story: an island, somewhat modernized, lived by French colonizer and black peasants. Monsieur Bienconnu tells the story of the traditional gods on the island: the god of earth and water: Asaka and Agwe. Peasants on the island live depend on their mood, yet the riches on the island are not much affected by them. Tonton Julian does not believe too much in these gods. Instead, he believes in working hard. He somehow respects the legend. Mama Euralie and Désirée believes in the tale. Desiree always goes daydreaming because she believes she is special. She is spoiled by her adopt parents because they were old. Chapter Two: This chapter indicates the identity of Desiree.
