First Three Stories in Kirk? Krak!

Ages Our history is an important part that made us who we are. Parents and children’s relationship is well discussed as a theme of Kirk? Krak! After reading the first three stories, I found that there is something more interests me under the theme of the relationships. Parents and children’s relationship is sophisticated, but most of the behaviors of either the parents or the children can be explained by analysing their conflicts and expectations of each other. The conflicts and expectations can also be traced back to their histories, their heritages, their ages, and what makes them themselves. All three stories contain people from different ages. Difference creates conflicts and confusions. In the third story, Guy came from an age of terror and oppression, while little Guy is living in a easier environment where people can express their will of freedom. From the scene that little Guy is able to participate in a show promoting “freedom,” we can see that little Guy is living in a...

Research On Haiti

Biographical info about the author 1. Four years old, her mother and father had moved to the United States, leaving Danticat and her brother behind with an aunt and uncle. She joined her parents in 1981, but, with her Creole language and Haitian dress and manners, she found adapting to life and school in the United States difficult. Partly as a way to escape these unpleasant situations, she wrote stories, a practice she had started at an early age. 2. Her parents had hoped that she would have a career in medicine 3. Theater Terms Y2

1) I think I know these terms well:  1. stage directions  2. types of theater  3. types of stage well  4. terms involving rehearsals  5. characters' relationships These terms are mostly about the stage and the cast. I know these terms well because I have acted in the Black Box Theater. 2)I think I need to work on these terms more:  1. Scenic design  2. Dramtag  3. Dry Tech  4. Sitzprobe  5. Theorists These terms are mostly about proscenium theater, tech, and crew. I also think there are many theorists and their complicated techniques should be studied more in order to implement them on stage.

Reflection in-class FITM Performance

1. Helen's group The group presented a dialogue between three people. Using the aggressive language from the text and improvising body movements, the group presented the topic of violence in the Fires in the Mirror. Among the group members, Helen used mostly the aggressive language and Joey combined the language and some subtle movements. I think the movements in both of them can be more aggressive and with purpose. In addition, I can see Helen's facial expressions, which represented the topic of violence well. In the performance, David Wang separated the two arguing members. He made his point that violence has no actual meaning. The presence of David (or that kind of people) reveals that violence should have a resolution with reconciliation. 2. Josh's group The group presented three different monologues from different race groups. Two of the monologues were not chosen from the ones that represent the direct conflict between the two races. Josh's performance of ...

Verbatim in Class

I think Verbatim theater is done mostly for political purpose. Because it reflects the reaction of people and put it on stage for many to watch, verbatim theater can present some “minority” thoughts and can open it for public to discuss. Thus Verbatim theater can be used to present unique political views. By appealing to strong emotions from small or anonymous characters, Verbatim Theater achieves to present not only the character but also many other voices that are not heard by the top rank society. I think experiencing Verbatim Theater is different from experiencing any other theater production. In Verbatim Theater, my group and I are imitating the character that is already exist. It is different from other theaters because the existing character in real world might not have distinct features that stands out. On the other hand, the fictional characters, however, are created to serve a distinct purpose. For example, telling the storyline; every character is important. Thus I think cre...

What is theater?

I thought theater is a magical place living glimpses of time; it is a temporary world created plastically, being built and ended again and again. Theater in my view now, is not just a wonderland distracting people from reality, either from their depression or from their emptiness. Theater is also a tool. Using theater, people see the reality they do not normally see in real world. Theater, working as a scoop, zoom in and exposing the blindspot people ignore in the real life either deliberately or undeliberately. People like theater. However, I do not think they like it for it is useful, but people like it for it is obscure. People like to participate in the theater because it is fake. Actors and actresses like it because they live in it. Because every world that theater creates is way smaller than the real world, it is more real living in the small world than living in the real world; the sense of existence is way much bigger in a theater. Because worlds in theater are so small, b...
