Plot:
The story is showed inside the letters between lovers. The boy is smart and made into the university, the girl is from a normal family. The father of the girl disapprove the relationships between the lovers, partially because the boy promotes democracy and is a revolutionist. The political cleansing began in Haiti, so the boy fleet with other 34 people on a boat. The lovers made promise to write letters to each other, although they cannot receive the letters from each other. The boat the boy is on has cracks, which water is coming. The boat is sinking. The girl, on the other hand, is planing to leave to the countryside ville rose. On the boat, the boy saw a pregnant girl gave birth of a dead child. To lessen the weight of the boat, she throw the child into the sea and then jump into the sea with her child. The boy was threaten to throw the letters into the sea, he probably jump into the sea, too. The girl heard the death of her lover's mother and successfully arrived ville rose. But Ville rose is no shelter. She later pre-saw the boy's death.

Feelings:

It is a depressing story... The story says hope is the greatest weapon that goes against people themselves. The lovers do not know, the letters are the hope, and the butterflies are the hope. They trapped themselves in a romantic and melancholy way. When the boy had to throw away the letters, nothing is important to him, and nothing is bearable to him. What lives arounds him are not only the sharks; but also the shark-like, animal-like humans. The letters have hope, they are delightful, especially when dreams are present. But under the delight tone of some letters, there are slow sadness, worries, and despair. The uncertainty both lovers withhold, they can only find place in letters, trees, and stars. At the end, letters became the dead child of a suffered mother, trees fall as bullets break through, and stars vanished in the waving water.

The political issue and family relationships are also shown in the story. Through the sad and affectionate letters, I feel the issue in Haiti is suffocating, as the flesh and bones and hearts were pressed into dust.
