1.
I think Mercutio is the one who causes his own death. In the beginning of the Act 3 scene 1, Mercutio acts aggressively to Benvolio. Himself at this point has already shown his willing to fight anyone that comes into his mind. Mercutio has potential to engage into a fight very easily no matter who is the one he is going to fight with. After Tybalt comes, Mercutio constantly trying to find excuse from Tybalt's language so that he can fight with Tybalt. He tries to twist the word "consort" into "minstrels". He also tries to use Romeo's compromization as somewhat cowardness to fight Tybalt to show he is a real man.

Mercutio is provocative because his arrogance. No matter if Romeo will go between Tybalt and Mercutio or not, Mercutio is very likely to die because his arrogance. Tybalt is coming to kill Romeo, although initially not offending Mercutio, Tybalt has determined to kill a person. When Mercutio stands out, Tybalt's target transfer to Mercutio because Mercutio waves his sword to Tybalt. However, Mercutio seems he just wants to provoke a fight, not preparing to kill anyone. The difference between the two's determination also lead Mercutio's death, which is direction resulted from Mercutio's arrogance.

2.
As a director, I will make Mercutio very active at provoking a fight. Including exaggerated movements, Mercutio will have dramatic raises and falls in his language and tones of speaking to make him a mad, bold, rude, frivolous, and mindless character. To make a contrast, I will let Tybalt stand face to face to Mercutio. Moreover, Tybalt should be a calm and determined character with firm tone and thoughtful movements. The fight between Tybalt and Mercutio should be fast. Mercutio should act less skill on the sword dancing, while Tybalt has more skill. The power that Tybalt has is over Mercutio should be easily sensed by the audience. The time that Romeo goes between Tybalt and Mercutio should be the time that Romeo senses Tybalt might lose. Tybalt thus can have chance to kill Mercutio by a clean, quick stab. Tybalt should act little bit nervous after he wounds Mercutio and flee. (He loses his courage and determination of kill anyone else because he already killed Mercutio. This is why Tybalt is killed by Romeo, he now doesn't want to kill anybody but Romeo clearly wants to kill Tybalt.)
In the fight between Romeo and Tybalt, Romeo should be crazy and wave his sword madly without any skill. Tybalt should have no perpareness in front of Romeo. The fight should be even faster. As fast as possible, Romeo will just waves his sword twice and then stab Tybalt to put Tybalt down. Tybalt will doge twice but not even wants to draw the sword.
