Strength, Weakness, and Revision
I’m still proud about the plot of the story. However, there are many weaknesses on the script, performance, technology, transitions, and memorization.
In terms of the script, the revision and addition will happen during the winter break. We might abandon the guy’s death scene for shorten the play duration. We will add a monologue/solo for Lili she she sees guy’s corpse if we did not delete guy’s death scene. I will also add a transitional monologue as an outsider during Nan’s costume change. However, if we could design a faster costume change for Nan, we don’t need to add the monologue. Singing parts of the play will be extended, and there will be on stage transitional music. For now the play is plain. On the other hand, revision in the second part is needed. Little guy seems too cruel, and we need a reasonable explanation why he could not take mama and the girl with him to go to America.
In terms of performance, the contractions between guy and little guy is not significant enough. I designed guy as an excited person, he could move around and has greater levels than little guy. Little guy, instead, is encountering a different situation. His tonality should be heavy and hesitant. His would also have less movement. In addition, my voice could be louder.
Confusions in technology seriously slowed down the tempo of the play. We need to design more precise lighting instructions. I would research about lighting instructions during the break. We also need to purchase some set pieces. I am considering using blankets or curtains to practice the scene change instead of spinning the triangles.
The costume change should be simplified.
Memorization is crucial to this play. After the script is set, we have to follow the script precisely. I apologize I forgot to deliver some lines in my final monologue, and the annunciation in the beginning was poor. Moreover, cue lines in this play is very important. As forgetting one line would influence the according line in second part as well. Today we did not introduce a significant new added line which reveal crucial identities of both guy and little guy. I was pissed off and we mustn’t neglect our memorization as the script is the spirit of our play.
