Character analysis through Uta Hagen 9 Questions

1. Who am I?
Both Guy and Guillaume are citizens of Haiti. Guy is Guillaume's father and Lili's husband. Guy wants more than what he has now, but he is not well educated. He is fantasied by the idea of flying away. Guillaume is a somewhat educated student, at least went through high school. He knows where he should belong.

2. What time is it?
The story happens in two generations, when the political atmosphere changed from a unpromising peace to a period of terror.

3. Where am I?
In Haiti/ on the sea. Guy and Guillaume is in a poor neighborhood where the rich scatters. However, the condition of the neighborhood for Guillaume has improved.

4. What surrounds me?
Crowding people are not nice. When somebody dies, or before it dies, they gossips. The political atmosphere is also intense. Some tensions have built in Guy's age.

5. What are the given circumstances?
Guy does not want to be restricted thus he wants to fly away via balloon. Guillaume does not want to live under terror thus he wants to flee to America.

6. What are my relationships?
Guy is Guillaume's father and is Lili's husband. Guillaume has a girl friend.

7. What do I want?
Guy wants a world that gives him more freedom. Guillaume wants a world where people are not appressed.

8. What is in my way?
Guy has no plan for the future, and Lili opposes his idea. Guillaume has to go across the sea to reach his goal.

9. What do I do to get what I want?
Guy flies on an air balloon and Guillaume sails away by a boat.

Romeo and Juliet's First Expression

The first time that Shakespeare introduces Romeo is by the conversation between Benvolio and Romeo. He is sad about the refusal from the Rosaline. The emotion is so strong that he frustrates himself and unwilling to interact with his friends and parents. Simply say, Romeo is too in love that his love is hurting himself: “ Griefs of my own lie heavy in my breast.” (Romeo and Juliet 21) Later on scene 4, he has worries that something bad will happen during the party and thus unwilling to go. The dialogues Romeo and Mercutio have implied that his anxiety comes from Romeo’s dream. However, it does not suggest the contents of the dream. Based on Romeo previous action about love, I think the dream is about him and Rosaline. He feels fear about meeting Rosaline in the party. MLML 8-10 notes

Chapter 8: This chapter talks about the journey of Desiree to the grand hotel. I think it not only notes how hard Desiree is on the way to her dream, but also a real state of the island. It was amazing how the author keeps our blinded as peasants in the beginning, not sure where we are. I was confused and scared at first with all the myths. And was blinded with peasants' one side argument about how widely the people on the island detach from each other. But through Desiree's journey, I finds that the trench between the poor and the rich are not as bad as I was imagining. There are different levels of the poor and the rich, Desiree is just unlucky to love the richest one. First I thought the story happens in a fantasy novel, with all the hierarchy and cruel king. I was wrong. It is a modern society, only that our main character comes from a forgotten no where. The narration of the journey thus makes the world of the story more wholistic.
