Romeo and Juliet Act 2

Act 2 :

Scene 1:

  • Romeo is struggling if he is going back to see Juliet
  • Benvolio and Mercutio come
  • Romeo hides
  • Benvolio and Mercutio try to irrigate Romeo and let him come out
  • Benvolio and Mercutio give up

Too much Rosaline

Scene 2:

  • Romeo hide himself under Juliet's room and wished to see Juliet.
  • Juliet appears and says Romeo
  • Romeo reveal himself
  • During their date, Nurse calls Juliet many times
  • They "promise" their love and set time for the next date.
1. Pp. 69 :" o, swear not," "do not swear," "well, do not swear" (Juliet)
She is saying the opposite. Or afraid of Romeo's dishonesty 


Scene 3:

  • Introducing Friar Lawrence.
  • Romeo approaches
  • Friar Lawrence states that Romeo has not sleep
  • Romeo says he is in love and forget about Rosaline
  • Friar Lawrence is surprised
  • He reconsiders and agrees their marriage
1.  Romeo has better relationship with the monk than Benvolio and Mercutio 
2.  Rosaline is a shadow. As I said, Romeo changes so fast. "Swear by the unconsistent moon?"
3.  Pp.77 “Poison hath residence and medicine power” speaking of love?
4. Pp. 79 "young men's love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes." Romeo does not love Rosaline and Juliet by heart?


Scene 4:

  • Romeo backs and finds Benvolio and Mercutio
  • They tease each other
  • Nurse comes
  • Mercutio makes fun of her
  • Romeo helps Nurse
  • Nurse gets Romeo's Message
1. Nurse seems like she likes Romeo even she has not know Romeo yet.


Scene 5:

  • Nurse comes back to Juliet 
  • Juliet is too eager to know the news from Romeo
  • They tease each other
  • Nurse tells Juliet that they will be married
1. Call your mom. Mom is something that they always joke about?

Scene 6:

  • Friar Lawrence married them
  • They kiss
  • Friar Lawrence tries to stop them
1. Friar Lawrence doesn't seems like he likes the couple

Romeo and Juliet's First Expression

The first time that Shakespeare introduces Romeo is by the conversation between Benvolio and Romeo. He is sad about the refusal from the Rosaline. The emotion is so strong that he frustrates himself and unwilling to interact with his friends and parents. Simply say, Romeo is too in love that his love is hurting himself: “ Griefs of my own lie heavy in my breast.” (Romeo and Juliet 21) Later on scene 4, he has worries that something bad will happen during the party and thus unwilling to go. The dialogues Romeo and Mercutio have implied that his anxiety comes from Romeo’s dream. However, it does not suggest the contents of the dream. Based on Romeo previous action about love, I think the dream is about him and Rosaline. He feels fear about meeting Rosaline in the party. MLML 8-10 notes

Chapter 8: This chapter talks about the journey of Desiree to the grand hotel. I think it not only notes how hard Desiree is on the way to her dream, but also a real state of the island. It was amazing how the author keeps our blinded as peasants in the beginning, not sure where we are. I was confused and scared at first with all the myths. And was blinded with peasants' one side argument about how widely the people on the island detach from each other. But through Desiree's journey, I finds that the trench between the poor and the rich are not as bad as I was imagining. There are different levels of the poor and the rich, Desiree is just unlucky to love the richest one. First I thought the story happens in a fantasy novel, with all the hierarchy and cruel king. I was wrong. It is a modern society, only that our main character comes from a forgotten no where. The narration of the journey thus makes the world of the story more wholistic.
